Overview

TradeMarcas was conceptualized to provide an accessible and efficient platform for Latin American entrepreneurs to register their brands in the United States. The project was initiated by an Intellectual Property lawyer who identified a need for a user-friendly, Spanish-language service that simplifies the complex process of trademark registration for Latin American businesses.

  • Objective

Create an online platform that allows Latin American entrepreneurs to register their trademarks in the U.S. easily and securely, while also providing tools for lawyers to manage and process these registrations efficiently.

  • Target Users

Entrepreneurs: Small to medium-sized business owners looking to expand their brands into the U.S. market.

Lawyers: Intellectual Property lawyers managing the registration process.

Research

The Landscape of Trademark Registration Platforms

I conducted a comprehensive analysis of existing trademark registration platforms to understand their offerings, strengths, and weaknesses. Key findings included:

  • Many platforms were only available in English, creating a language barrier.

  • Complex and lengthy forms often led to user frustration and drop-offs.

  • Limited tools for lawyers to manage multiple client requests efficiently.

Adapting Legal Content

I worked closely with the initiating lawyer to:

  • Adapt all information and content into clear, easy-to-understand Spanish.

  • Ensure legal accuracy and compliance with USPTO regulations.

  • Incorporate insights from his experience to enhance user experience.

Design Approach

User Personas

Entrepreneur Persona

A small business owner with limited legal knowledge who needs a straightforward process to register their brand.

Lawyer Persona

An IP lawyer handling multiple client requests, needing an efficient management system.

Mapping User Journeys

I created streamlined workflows for both entrepreneurs and lawyers by mapping out their user journeys, identifying key touchpoints, and addressing potential pain points to ensure a seamless and efficient experience for each user type.

User-Friendly Spanish-Language Interface for Entrepreneurs

The Entrepreneur Interface features a clean, Spanish-language layout for optimal accessibility and ease of use. It includes a straightforward brand search function within the USPTO database, highlighting the most relevant information for users. The registration form is streamlined with clear instructions and progress indicators, and there is a simple display of key USPTO information regarding the status of the registration.

Simplified Form Design for Enhanced Usability

To avoid overwhelming users, I divided the registration form into logical sections, guiding them step-by-step through the process. These sections included Brand, Usage, Property, Classification, and Payment. I also utilized visual cues, such as progress bars and clear navigation buttons, to further enhance usability and ensure a smooth user experience.

Efficient Lawyer Management Platform

I designed a Lawyer Management Platform with a Request Management Dashboard serving as a centralized hub for lawyers to view and manage all client requests, and track the status of each application. This platform includes two different profiles: an administrator who can assign requests and manage team members, and a lawyer who can only manage their own requests. Additionally, the Detailed Request View provides access to all necessary information for each request, allowing lawyers to copy and paste information directly into official forms, thereby streamlining the manual submission process.

What I’ve learned

  • From the beginning of this project, I worked closely with the lawyer to grasp the project's needs and scope. Through interviews, I gained valuable insights into the brand registration process from both the entrepreneur’s and the lawyer’s perspectives.

  • I developed dashboard skills by working directly with developers, leveraging their expertise to address functional challenges.

  • Project management involved coordinating with the client to gather information and approvals while ensuring that developers had the necessary resources and followed the design specifications.

  • Since the project is still ongoing, my learning continues.
